2018 Corporate Finance Overview
Our 2018 Corporate Finance Overview outlines transactions that we completed nationally in 2018 and what the most active sectors were. The document also demonstrates our national and international capability, showing where we rank in Experian’s United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland M&A Review 2018 rankings by deal volume.
2018 was another strong year for UK M&A as the total number of completed transactions reached 7,539 – a 2.3% increase on 2017 and exceeding the ten-year average volume by 25%. The UK ranked as the third most popular country for inbound M&A activity (beaten only by China and the USA), and large transactions pushed the total deal value to over £372bn; just the second time it has exceeded £300bn in the past ten years.
Regionally, the pattern of activity was more nuanced – the North of England saw a flourish of transactions, as the North West, the North East and Yorkshire & Humber increased deal volumes by 11%, 27% and 19% respectively. Conversely, transaction volumes fell in the South West, East of England and Midlands, and remained relatively flat in London and the South East. The MHA Corporate Finance team advised on 91 domestic and cross border transactions in 2018; a 7% increase from 2017.
